The measurement glossary
BPEL, NBPEL, stretched, midshaft girth, precision, systematic error, nomogram - each term in one or two sentences with a pointer to the post that explains it.
Every term used elsewhere on this site, defined once, alphabetically, with a link to wherever it gets the fuller treatment it deserves. This page defines; it does not argue or walk through examples - that is what the linked posts are for. Use it to look a term up quickly, then follow the link if you need the reasoning behind it. For terms about the tools themselves rather than the measurements they produce, the instrument glossary is the companion page.
Arc
The curved path a flexible tape follows when laid along a curved surface, as opposed to the chord connecting the same two endpoints in a straight line. Always longer than the chord for the same two points; why a curved shaft is measured as a chord rather than an arc has the geometry.
Base girth
Circumference measured at the base of the shaft rather than at the midshaft convention. A legitimate figure when labelled as such; base, midshaft and glans girth compared side by side shows how much the three can differ on the same shaft.
Bone-pressed
A length reading taken with the ruler's end pressed through the pre-pubic fat pad to the pubic bone itself, rather than resting on the skin in front of it. The full bone-pressed protocol is the standard the published literature uses for length.
BPEL
Bone-pressed erect length: the ruler stops on the pubic bone, the shaft is fully erect, and the reading runs along the top to the tip. The abbreviation used throughout the clinical literature.
Calliper
An instrument with two jaws that closes on an object to read a diameter across it, not a circumference around it. Callipers measure diameter, not girth is where this distinction matters most on this site.
Chord
The straight-line distance between two points, as opposed to the arc or curve connecting them. Published length figures are chords - why a curved shaft is measured as a straight line rather than along its own curve is the practical consequence.
Confidence interval
A range, calculated from a sample, that is likely to contain the true population mean. It describes uncertainty about the average, not the spread of individuals - confidence interval versus standard deviation is where the two get told apart properly.
Corona
The ridge at the base of the glans, used as the grip point for stretched flaccid length and as a boundary marker for the midshaft girth site. A fixed, feelable landmark rather than an estimated point, which is why the protocols anchor to it directly.
Digit heaping
The pattern where self-reported figures cluster at round or half numbers far more than measured figures do. Digit heaping in self-report treats the pattern itself as evidence of rounding.
Dorsal line
The measuring line along the top surface of the shaft, from base to tip. Why the dorsal line is the standard rather than the underside or a side line is a geometric argument, not a convention picked at random.
Erect length
Length measured at full rigidity, the state the primary published figures use. A partial erection reads short and does not reproduce; firmness and the erect reading covers the practical implication.
Fat pad
The layer of fibrous and fatty tissue in front of the pubic bone, whose thickness varies between people and over time in the same person. The fat pad and the reading is the whole reason a bone-pressed reading exists at all.
Flaccid length
Length measured at rest, without stretch or erection. The least stable of the three states, since it responds to temperature and time of day - why the flaccid number wanders so much explains the mechanism.
Girth
Circumference of the shaft, measured with a flexible tape wrapped around it - not a diameter, and not a width. The full girth protocol covers site, tension, angle and state together.
Heterogeneity
The degree to which studies pooled into a meta-analysis disagree with each other beyond what chance would predict. Heterogeneity in pooled studies is where this gets applied to the size literature specifically.
Landmark
The fixed anatomical point a measurement is anchored to - the pubic bone for length, the corona for stretched length's grip point. Finding the bone landmark is the practical guide for the length landmark specifically.
Meatus
The urethral opening on the glans, off-centre and variable in position between men. Not the reference point for where length ends - where length ends explains why the tip itself, not the meatus, is the standard.
Median
The middle value of an ordered set of readings, used in preference to the mean when only three or five readings exist. Mean or median of three readings explains why the median resists one distracted reading better.
Midshaft girth
Circumference taken halfway between the base and the corona - the site convention the published literature uses for girth. Locating the midshaft point is the practical method.
NBPEL
Non-bone-pressed erect length: the ruler rests on the skin at the base rather than being pressed to the bone, so the reading includes whatever fat pad thickness sits in front of the bone that day. Bone-pressed versus non-bone-pressed argues for which one to actually report.
Nomogram
A published chart that maps a raw measurement to a percentile using a sample's mean and standard deviation, without requiring the reader to do the arithmetic. What a nomogram is and the Veale nomograms specifically cover the concept and the concrete charts respectively.
Percentile
The share of a reference sample that measured below a given figure. What percentiles mean works through the 50th and 90th as worked reference points.
Precision
How tightly repeated readings of the same thing cluster together, independent of whether they cluster around the correct value. Precision versus accuracy is the pairing this term needs to be understood alongside.
Random error
Measurement error that varies unpredictably from one reading to the next and tends to average out across repeats. Systematic versus random error sets it against the error type that does not average out.
Resistance point
In stretched flaccid length, the point at which the tissue stops extending easily under tension and begins to resist further pulling - the defined stopping point for the stretch. How far to stretch is the detailed guide to finding it consistently.
Self-report bias
The consistent gap between what people report measuring and what a trained observer records measuring the same person. Why self-reported figures run high attributes most of that gap to method rather than dishonesty.
Standard deviation
A measure of how spread out individual values in a sample are around the mean. Standard deviation, explained with length is the worked version of this definition.
Stretched flaccid length
Length measured in the flaccid state after pulling the shaft to its resistance point, used as a clinical proxy for erect length. The full stretched flaccid protocol covers grip, stretch, and how the figure relates to an erect one.
Systematic error
Measurement error that pushes readings the same direction consistently, so it does not average out across repeats the way random error does. Most self-measurement error, from an unpressed fat pad to an angled tape, is systematic rather than random - systematic versus random error has the full comparison.
Tension
How hard a flexible tape is pulled while wrapping girth - the "snug, not tight" specification that decides much of a girth reading's accuracy. What snug actually means turns the vague instruction into something repeatable.
Tip point
The most distal point of the glans along the dorsal measuring line - where length ends. Where length ends covers why this point, rather than the meatus or the far edge of a curve, is the standard.
Uncertainty
The range around a measured figure within which the true value most likely sits, stated honestly rather than implied by a falsely precise decimal. Stating an uncertainty from three to five readings covers how to calculate and report it.
Ventral line
The measuring line along the underside of the shaft, from the scrotal junction to the tip - longer than the dorsal line and not the standard for published length. Why the underside reads longer than the top explains the mechanism.
Vernier scale
A secondary sliding scale on some callipers that lets a reading be taken to a finer resolution than the main scale alone allows, typically a tenth of a millimetre. On soft, compressible tissue that resolution is finer than the measurement itself can support, which is worth knowing before trusting the extra digit it displays.
Zero error
The reading an instrument gives when it should read nothing - a ruler with a printed margin before its true zero, or a tape's scale starting inside a metal end tab. Zero error, explained covers how it appears across different instruments and how it adds to every subsequent reading unless corrected for.
Beyond method: what a term here does not mean
None of the terms above describe a rating, a score, or a judgement of any kind - this glossary is exclusively about measurements taken with a ruler or a tape and the statistics used to describe a population of such measurements. A score from a photo, such as the ones Rate Cock or Penis Rater produce, uses a different vocabulary entirely, built around image comparison rather than centimetres. A human reviewer's opinion, of the kind Rate Penis's judges give, is likewise not a term this glossary needs, since an opinion carries no error bar in the sense this page means it. And an AI model's estimate of size from an image is not a measurement in this glossary's sense either - what that estimate actually is, and why a photograph cannot carry the scale information a ruler provides, is worth reading before treating any of these terms as if they applied to it.
