Which way the ruler points
A ruler held level while the shaft points upward reads a projection, and a ruler tilted past the shaft reads long; the rule is parallel to the shaft axis.
The rule is simple to state and easy to get wrong without noticing: the ruler lies along the axis of the shaft, not along the floor or the wall behind you. Get the angle wrong and the number you read is a projection of the true length onto whatever line you held the ruler on, not the length itself.
What a projection is, and why it is shorter
Picture the shaft as a straight line running from the pubic bone to the tip, tilted upward at some angle from horizontal.
