How far to stretch

Stretched length is taken at the point where the tissue resists further extension, and inconsistent tension is the main reason the number moves.

Stretched flaccid length is not measured to a fixed distance you pull toward. It is measured to a point defined by feel: pull until the tissue resists further extension, and stop there.

What "resistance" means

Grasp the glans and pull gently away from the body, along the same axis the shaft would take if erect. As you pull, the tension in the shaft increases smoothly at first, then reaches a point where further extension takes noticeably more force for very little additional distance. That point - not the point of discomfort, and not the furthest you can physically manage - is the resistance point the protocol asks for. It is a change in how the tissue responds, not a number on the ruler, which is what makes it something you have to learn to feel rather than something you can look up.

Why both directions of error matter

Pulling short of resistance under-reads. If you stop as soon as the shaft feels reasonably taut rather than continuing to the point where it stops giving, the reading comes in shorter than the tissue would actually allow, and it will not repeat, because "reasonably taut" is not a fixed amount of tension from one attempt to the next.

Pulling past resistance does not add real length either, but it adds instability. Once the tissue has stopped extending, additional force does not stretch it further in any repeatable way - it just increases discomfort and increases the chance the shaft slips in your grip or twists slightly, both of which move the ruler off the axis and change the reading for reasons that have nothing to do with tension at all.

The steady middle is the target: enough pull to reach the point where extension stops, held there - not yanked to it and not eased toward it indefinitely.

Making it repeatable

Use the same grip each time - typically the same two fingers on the glans, at the same point on it - because a shifting grip point changes the effective length being pulled and can let the tissue slip slightly before tension registers. Pull smoothly rather than in a sudden motion; a jerked pull can overshoot the resistance point before the sensation of resistance has time to register, and a sudden motion is harder to reproduce identically session to session. Take three readings, resetting the grip fully between each one rather than easing off slightly and pulling again, and look at the spread - stretched length readings that vary by more than roughly half a centimetre across three attempts usually mean the tension is landing at a different point each time, not that the underlying length is actually changing.

Signs you are not finding the same point twice

A spread across three readings that is small but consistently trending in one direction - each pull a little further than the last - usually means the tissue is being warmed up or desensitised by repetition rather than measured three independent times, and the fix is to space the readings out rather than take them back to back. A spread that bounces around with no direction, by contrast, more often points to a grip that is not landing on the same point of the glans each time, so the effective length being pulled changes even though the tension at resistance is roughly the same. Discomfort that increases sharply from one reading to the next, rather than staying level, is a sign of pulling past resistance rather than to it, and the fix there is not to pull less hard overall but to stop at the same felt point every time rather than easing into "however far it takes to be sure."

Why the point is a feeling and not a number

There is no published tension value, in newtons or otherwise, that corresponds to "resistance" for stretched-length protocols, and no instrument in a self-measurement setting could apply one consistently even if there were. The protocol relies on a physiological cue instead: the felt shift from tissue that is still yielding to tissue that has stopped yielding. This is part of why stretched length carries more session-to-session variability than a length measured against a fixed landmark like the pubic bone - flaccid length and why it wanders covers a related instability in a different measurement, but the underlying issue is the same family of problem: a reading anchored to a feeling rather than a fixed physical stop will always carry more noise than one that is not. Learning to recognise the resistance point reliably is a skill that improves with repetition, in the same way any hands-on measurement technique does, and the improvement shows up as a shrinking spread across repeated readings rather than as a change in the underlying length.

What this is not

This is the tension question alone. The full stretched-length protocol - state, posture, where the ruler reads, how many sessions to average - is at stretched flaccid length in full, and that is the post to go to for the complete method rather than this one detail. How well a stretched reading, taken this way, predicts an erect one is a separate question again, covered at stretched vs erect: how close the two readings sit, which this post does not attempt to answer.

Stretched length exists as a measurement at all because it is easier to standardise in a clinical setting than an erection, and because Wessells and colleagues (1996) found it tracked erect length reasonably well in a small clinical sample - the study generally credited as the origin of using it as a proxy. It answers a specific, narrow question about tissue extension, not a subjective one - an image-based estimate reads a photograph rather than a felt resistance point, a picture-based estimate like Rate Cock or Penis Rater offers is not measuring resistance at all, it is scoring an appearance, and a rating from Rate Penis is a different kind of opinion again, from a person rather than a ruler.
