The 3 x 3 protocol
Within a single sitting, take three separate readings: reposition, re-wrap or re-place the instrument between each one rather than reading the same static setup three times. Then repeat the whole sitting on two more days, ideally at roughly the same time of day each time, so you end up with nine numbers across three sessions.
Nine readings sounds like a lot for a length that is not going to change. It is not about the length changing - it is about seeing how much your own technique and state vary around whatever the true figure is, which a single reading cannot show you at all.
What each level of repetition tells you
The three readings taken within one session tell you about technique. If they are tight together, your setup - pressure, angle, landmark - is consistent from one reading to the next.
