Measuring curvature
Curvature is reported as an angle between the base axis and the distal axis; here is how it is measured and why it shortens the straight-line length reading.
Curvature, in the clinical literature, is a number, not a description. It is reported as an angle, and that angle is what connects curvature to the length measurement covered elsewhere on this site.
The angle being measured
Draw a line along the axis of the shaft near the base, and another along the axis near the tip. Where the shaft is straight, those two lines are the same line, and the angle between them is zero. Where the shaft curves, the two axes diverge, and the angle between them - measured where they would meet if extended - is the curvature figure. This is measured either directly, with a hinged instrument held against the two segments, or from a photograph taken at full erection with the two axes marked and a protractor applied to the image. Both approaches are estimating the same angle; a photograph method just moves the reading off the body and onto an image where it can be checked more carefully.
Why a curve shortens the straight-line length
Bone-pressed length, as the standard method defines it, is measured as a straight line: base to tip, along the top, the way a ruler reads it. A curved shaft is longer along its own surface than that straight line is, in the same way a curved road covers more ground than the straight-line distance between its endpoints. Following the curve with a flexible tape gives a number that is not comparable to the published data, because the literature's method is explicitly the chord, not the arc.
The geometry is straightforward: for a fixed arc length, more curvature means the chord connecting the two ends gets shorter relative to that arc. A ten-degree curve barely shortens the chord. A pronounced curve can shorten it by a centimetre or more, entirely as a consequence of geometry, without the tissue itself being any shorter along its own path. This is one reason two shafts with the same surface length can report different bone-pressed lengths, and it is not an error in either reading - it is what the straight-line convention is designed to do.
Reading the angle in practice
However it is measured, the reading is taken at full erection, because curvature can shift somewhat as an erection firms up and the axis near the tip settles into its resting position. A photograph taken at less than full firmness, or a hinged instrument applied while the shaft is still soft, will not capture the same angle as one taken at full rigidity, for reasons close to those covered under firmness and the erect reading more generally - a partial state gives an unrepeatable number here just as it does for length. The angle is usually read to the nearest five or ten degrees rather than to single-degree precision, because tissue is not perfectly rigid and the two axes are each an estimate of a line rather than a hard edge like the markings on a ruler.
What this post does not cover
This is a measurement description, not a medical one. Curvature above a certain degree is something a clinician evaluates, and that evaluation is not something this site does or should be read as doing - if curvature is a concern, the relevant fact is that a clinician measures this angle too, using the same kind of protractor-on-photo or hinged-instrument approach described above, and that is the extent of what belongs here. Keep it separate from subjective assessment
None of this overlaps with how a shape reads to a viewer, which is a different kind of judgement entirely - an angle in degrees is not the same thing as a subjective rating like the kind Rate Cock produces from a photograph, and neither substitutes for the other.
