What a calliper reads

A calliper gives a width across, and girth is a circumference; multiplying by pi is only right if the cross-section is a circle, and it is not.

A calliper closes its jaws across an object and reads the distance between them: a diameter, not a circumference. Girth, as the literature and this site use the word, is a circumference - the distance around - so a calliper reading needs a conversion step before it is a girth figure at all, and that step carries its own assumption.

The conversion, and what it assumes

Circumference equals diameter times pi, but only for a circle. Close a calliper across the shaft, multiply the reading by roughly 3.14, and you get an estimate of circumference that is exactly right if the cross-section is circular and increasingly wrong the further it departs from circular. Real cross-sections here are not circular - they are closer to an ellipse, sometimes a noticeably flattened one - which is why a single-diameter calliper reading tends to under-read the true girth. Where the reading also moves on its own

Separate from the shape problem, callipers close by pressing their jaws against soft tissue, and how firmly they close changes the reading - there is no natural stop the way there is when a rigid ruler hits bone. Why the confusion happens at all

The word "calliper" gets attached to two different jobs in casual use, and that is most of where the confusion originates. Engineering callipers measure a workpiece's diameter or thickness, and the reading is exactly what the display says: a width, nothing implied about circumference. Skinfold callipers, used in body composition work, measure a pinched fold of tissue - a different kind of width again, covered separately for the fat-pad application - and neither type is built to answer a circumference question on its own. Girth entered the picture only because someone reached for the nearest tool that gives a number quickly, then applied a formula that happens to be exactly correct for one specific shape and only approximately correct for anything else.

The size of the gap in practice

Because the conversion assumes a circle, the error scales with how far the actual cross-section departs from circular - a mild flattening costs little, a pronounced one costs more, and the direction is always the same: a calliper-derived girth using one diameter tends to sit below a directly measured tape reading, never above it. That consistency is useful. If a calliper estimate and a tape reading on the same person disagree, the tape reading is very likely the more trustworthy of the two, rather than the disagreement being a coin flip about which instrument to believe.

When a calliper is still worth having

A calliper is not useless here. It is a fast, precise way to check a tape for stretch - lay the tape's printed centimetre marks against a calliper's jaws at a known opening and see whether they agree - and it is a legitimate instrument for width as its own quantity, reported as width rather than dressed up as a converted girth. Width across the flat, unconverted, is also the number a condom's stated size relates to more directly than girth does, as the flat-width conversion explains. What a calliper is not good for, on its own, is standing in for a tape.

The instrument that avoids the problem

A tailor's tape or a paper strip measures circumference directly, by going around the actual shape rather than inferring it from a straight-line width and an assumption about the cross-section. That is the reason the standard instrument comparison recommends a tape for girth and a rigid ruler only for length: each instrument is matched to what it measures without conversion, and a calliper used for girth is always doing a conversion a tape does not need.

Keep the two kinds of number apart

None of this changes what a measurement is for. A girth figure, converted correctly or not, is a distance with an uncertainty, and it answers a different question from a subjective score - a photograph rated by something like Rate Cock produces a judgement, not a circumference, and the two are not interchangeable however precise the calliper.
