Rings and gauges

Graduated rings and slotted gauges give girth by which one fits, which is a coarse ordinal reading rather than a measurement; a tape is finer.

A sizing gauge is a set of rings, or a plate with graduated slots, and the result you get from one is "this size fits and the next size up does not." That is a real reading, but it is not the same kind of number a tape gives you.

What a gauge actually resolves

Most sets step in increments of a few millimetres of diameter, sometimes as coarse as 5 mm between adjacent rings. Your result is bounded between two rings rather than read off a continuous scale, so the gauge tells you which interval you fall in, not where in that interval you sit.

This is an ordinal measurement. It ranks you against a fixed set of categories. A tape or a strip of paper against a ruler gives an interval measurement - a continuous number with a resolution set by how finely the scale is marked, not by how many rings happen to be in a box. The two are not interchangeable, and reporting a ring number as though it carried tape-level precision overstates what the gauge did.

Why the coarseness matters more than it seems

The gap between rings is usually larger than the error bar you are trying to bound, which defeats the point of measuring carefully in the first place. If your girth sits close to a ring boundary, small day-to-day variation - tension of the tissue, how firmly the ring is pressed on, state - can flip you between two adjacent sizes on separate attempts. A tape does not have that failure mode, because there is no boundary to sit near; the reading just moves by however much the underlying value moved.

Fit is also a function of the ring's own geometry, not only its stated diameter. A ring with a rounded inner edge and one with a sharp edge can both be labelled the same size and feel different, because "fits" depends on where along the ring's depth you judge the fit. A tape reading does not carry that ambiguity - it reports a number, and the number means the same thing regardless of the instrument's shape.

How a gauge is made, and why the steps are coarse

A ring set is usually machined or moulded in fixed diameter increments chosen for manufacturing convenience - round numbers in millimetres, evenly spaced - rather than in increments chosen to match how girth is actually distributed across people. Where the population is dense, near the middle of the range, a single ring step covers more people than it does near the edges of the set, so the same nominal step size represents a different amount of the population depending on where you land. A tape has no such artefact, because a continuous scale does not have steps at all - the resolution is set by the fineness of the markings, evenly, across the whole range.

A slotted gauge, the flat-plate version with graduated openings, behaves the same way in a different shape: you slide the object through decreasing slot widths until it stops, and the stopping slot is your category. The stopping point is also sensitive to how the object deforms under the plate's edges, which a ring wrapped fully around the object does not suffer from in the same way, since the ring's contact is distributed rather than concentrated at two edges.

What gauges are for

Gauges exist for a go/no-go decision: does this object fit within this category, yes or no. That is a legitimate purpose and it is faster than measuring, which is presumably why the format exists at all. It is a poor substitute for a number you intend to record, compare against a published figure, or track over time, because the categories a gauge offers were not chosen to match the resolution the literature reports in.

If you want a figure that means something next to a published mean, a tape or paper strip at the midpoint gives you one directly, and it costs nothing beyond a few extra seconds over reading off a ring.

A different kind of sizing entirely

None of this is the sizing that a shopping tool or a rating app is doing when it turns a photo into a suggested category.
