Tapes with a display
A digital readout on a flexible tape adds a decimal and removes nothing: the tape still stretches, still needs to be square, and still reads where you tension it.
A digital tape measure wraps a normal flexible tape around a sensor that reads position electronically and shows the result on a small screen, usually to a tenth of a millimetre. The display is new. Everything upstream of it is the same tape it has always been.
What the display changes
It changes presentation, not the physical process that produces the number. The tape still passes over the surface it is wrapping, it still stretches slightly with age and use the way any cloth or vinyl tape does, and the reading still depends on how snugly it was pulled - a digital display cannot sense whether the wrap was too tight, too loose, or dragged the skin as it went.
A tenth-of-a-millimetre readout also implies a precision the underlying reading does not have. Careful girth technique gets you to roughly ±0.2 cm - two millimetres - so a digital tape's extra decimal place is displaying noise, not information.
What can go wrong that a plain tape avoids
A digital tape adds a battery, a sensor, and a small amount of electronics to a mechanically simple tool, and each of those is one more thing that can fail or drift. A sensor that has not been zeroed correctly, or a battery running low enough to affect the display without failing outright, can introduce an error that looks exactly as authoritative as a correct reading - the screen shows a confident number either way, where a plain tape at least forces you to read the physical scale yourself and notice if something looks off.
Where it might help
A digital tape can hold a reading and display it steadily, which is useful if you are struggling to read a small scale at an awkward angle, and some models log a sequence of readings automatically, which saves writing them down by hand. Neither of those is an accuracy improvement; both are conveniences around a reading that is exactly as good as the tape underneath.
What it has nothing to do with
A digital tape's number comes from a physical wrap around a physical object. It shares nothing with the kind of output Rate Cock produces from a photograph, or a score from Penis Rater, or a human judge's opinion on Rate Penis - none of those involve a tape, digital or otherwise, and none should be quoted with the false precision a digital display invites. The same caution applies to an AI model's estimate from an image, which has no tape and no scale reference at all behind its number.
If you already own a good cloth tape, a digital one buys you a display and nothing else.
